UFC 280 Results Main Card

The UFC PPV's finally returned to the octagon last Saturday with a blockbusting card top to bottom. The main card included two title fights with Aljamain Sterling successfully defending his bantamweight title vs T.J. Dillashaw. Sterling stopped Dillashaw in the 2nd round via TKO after what was a dominant display marred by a gruesome shoulder injury suffered by Dillashaw in the first few exchanges of round one. Dillashaw later said post fight that he blew out his shoulder in April and dislocated it out "20 times during training camp". He later apologised to the weight class for holding it up.

The vacant lightweight title was claimed by Islam Makhachev after submitting Charles Oliveira in the second round. The Khabib prodigy extends his win streak to 11 after also ending Oliviera's 11-fight win streak. The Brazilian never really got going and he was even knocked down by Makhachev which was surprising given Oliveira was touted as the superior striker leading up to the bout. Alexander Volkanovski was brought into the Octagon after Makhachev's trainer, Khabib Nurmagmedov announced his fighters willingness to fight Volkanovksi in his back yard, Australia, for the pound-for-pound crown. Volkanovski has made it clear he intends to move up to 155 to become only the 5th fighter in UFC history to hold 2 titles simultaneously.

The "Suga show", Sean O'Malley, beat the former champion, Petr Yan via split decision in what was a very controversial outcome. Many fans labelled it a "robbery" with Petr Yan also later expressing his dismay at the judges. Yan had 5:52 minutes of control time compared to O'Malley's 0:02 seconds however on the feet O'Malley certainly landed the more damaging blows with Yan cut open after a knee to the head. O'Malley landed 84 significant strikes in comparison to Petr Yan's 58. It would appear a title shot awaits O'Malley after Dana White confirmed prior to the fight that the winner would receive the next bantamweight title shot against the winner of Sterling vs Dillashaw. However, he spoke post fight about the possibility of Sterling vs Henry Cejudo for the title so it would appear it is not a guarantee as we thought previously.

Beneil Dariush defeated Mateusz Gamrot via unanimous decision after what later earned Dariush a performance of the night bonus. Dariush extends his win streak to 8 which will surely now put him in contention for a title shot against the newly crowned, Makhachev.

Manon Fiorot won a unanimous decision vs the number #1 ranked, Katlyn Chookagian in the flyweight division which will propel Fiorot into the fray for a title shot vs Valentina Shevchenko.
